the ugly side of marketing

"Okay - I need everyone listening to rewind and listen to that minute over again. And then rewind it and listen to it again."

That's what Sara, a business coach for healers and helpers, said after I shared my perspective on sales and selling.

Sara recently had me on her podcast to chat about high ticket selling - and we covered everything from the mindset gremlins that influence our pricing decisions, to our fear of selling high-ticket offers, to the surprising downsides of charging too little for your services and gifts.

It's a smart conversation with some great reminders and takeaways about the programming and practical habits that influence our ability to sell premium offers.

Hint: at the 39:42 mark, Sara asks me to share the 1 shift I wish everyone would make in their marketing. I actually shared 2 things that could dramatically change your success with marketing and selling your offers.

The Ugly Side of Marketing

Back around 2015, I got really into a fitness and health program, the 21-day Fix. It was a Beachbody program that included a set of workout DVDs (yes, I'm "I used fitness DVDs" years old) and a kit that included little food containers to help manage portion control. Plus it was an MLM pyramid scheme to get you to buy protein powders and other supplements.

I followed the program consistently for a month or two and then dropped off. Then when Beachbody launched an app and streaming service, I tried Morning Meltdown, Brazilian Butt Lift, and some of the yoga programs. I couldn't seem to stick to anything for longer than a few weeks.

Now, if you're a woman (indeed a human) of a certain age, you've no doubt heard of Beachbody or even tried their fitness programs.

So when one of the OG Beachbody instructors, Chalene TurboJam Johnson, posted an expose on YouTube, I couldn't resist watching it.

In the 30-minute video, she talks about what happened to some of the original fitness influencers like Richard Simmons and Susan Powter (remember her?).

Most insightfully, she breaks down the "machine" behind fitness programs.

I wasn't necessarily surprised by what she shared. But what stood out for me was how much marketing - and in particular evil marketing - played in creating programs that are set up to make you fail.

Because when you fail at one program, you buy the next.

I was struck by the use of "frameworks" or "unique mechanisms" to sell the next best exercise scheme.

As a marketer, I'm reminded of how powerful marketing and persuasion can be. I do teach people to create frameworks and mechanisms, but I really strive to do this through an ethical lens and showcasing uniqueness - rather than fueling a system that thrives on a customer's failure.

Whether you're a Beachbody/BODi fan, or interested in the downsides of marketing, I think you might find this illuminating.

Over the weekend, we were busy cleaning the yard and getting it ready for spring and summer.

Each of us had our work gloves on our hands and our earbuds in our ears.

My husband asked me what I was listening to.

I said, "I'm listening to girl rage music."

He said, "So... like Ani Di Franco?"

In fact, yes. I was listening to the Ani Di Franco Radio playlist on Spotify.

And I haven't been able to stop listening since.

If you're into girl rage music, like Ani, the Indigo Girls, old-school Sinead, Alannis Morisette and Tori Amos, you'll love it too.

Pop this into your earholes to fuel whatever you're working on this week.

I'm curious what's inspiring or interesting you these days?

I've reached a new low, Reader. The other day I was reviewing a client's rough first draft of a lead magnet e-book, and left this comment in her Google doc: I know it's not the most professional editorial comment, but it was in response to an insipid phrase Claude had generated for my client. It's the kind of phrase I'm seeing over and over again in emails, posts, and marketing material generated with AI. And let me say right off the bat... I LOVE that AI tools are available to help busy,...

Hey Reader Entrepreneurship is a MF roller coaster. I started last week with a verbal confirmation on a contract that would have had me fully booked out until Q4. By the end of the week, that client backed out. You'd think I'd know by now to not count my chickens until they signed the contract. 🙄 And on Friday, I learned another client is downsizing her team, installing AI agents, and I'm likely the next on the chopping block. I went from feeling like hot shit, to feeling pretty shitty. I...

Hi Reader A few months back, I was hired by an Indigenous consulting firm to help with their messaging and positioning. They're incredibly effective in their work to help mid-sized corporations integrate and embed meaningful Reconciliation action plans, and create a more equitable workplace for all. I know they're effective because I interviewed several of their clients who couldn't say enough great things. They needed a little help because they felt their messaging wasn't effectively...
